My heart and prayers go out to the victims of the devastating wildfires in Maui that have claimed at least 96 lives so far and destroyed thousands of homes and businesses in and around the historic town of Lahaina. Thoughts and prayers are not enough, however, as Americans demand to know how we can prevent such destructive wildfires in the future.
No, the arson in Hawaii does not remind us of our need to heal our environment anymore than the intentionally set fires in Canada would do so. Same in northwest Spain where we lived. As a former resident of the big Island and a farmer who has employed biodynamic and regenerative agriculture practices for nearly 25 years, I couldn't agree more with RFK about what needs to be done to mitigate fires like this. The legacy of the mindless big ag corporations like Dole and the Big 5 sugar families is now being played out by these fires.
The most productive and the most fire resilient agricultural systems in Hawaii are its native forests. Replant them and all will be well.

Thank you. This multi-faceted approach reminds me of the Missouri Dept of Conservation, established in the 1920s. Unmanaged human harvesting had decimated, or even disappeared, many native plant and animal species here. Many species have made dramatic comebacks for decades now, and they're still making new progress nearly 100 years later. Their approach considers nature lovers, hunters, landowners, and government as cooperative players with a common interest in the environment. Everyone benefits.
